Admittedly, it feels good to walk out of rehab with the “monkey off your back.” Still, you have to realize your recovery is in its infancy. The battle for sobriety lasts for as long as you live. Why? There is no cure for addiction. However, you can arrest it and lay it to sleep forever. With that in mind, you need a solid strategy for keeping yourself on the road to recovery. To help, we offer some suggestions for maintaining sobriety.
Suggestions for Maintaining Sobriety
No one expects you to travel the road of recovery without a little help along the way. Beaches Recovery became the best inpatient drug and alcohol treatment center in Florida because we care. We care from the minute you call us past the day you head to the great beyond. In the interim, we would like to offer these suggestions for maintaining sobriety.
First and foremost, you must avoid temptation and your triggers. That probably means you have to make significant changes in your life. At a minimum, you have to remove the people, places and things in your life that enabled your substance use. Some decisions will be difficult. Just the same, they are necessary.
Second, you need a relapse prevention plan. This plan should include provisions for recognizing the warning signs of a relapse and how you will manage your way through them. The relapse prevention plan should also identify your support resources. Do you know the people and groups who can come to your rescue? Members of a 12 step recovery program are usually a good source of strength during trying times.
What to Do Should a Relapse Occur
Relapses do occur for a variety of reasons. When one does happen, time is critical. Do you know where to turn after you swallow that pill or liquid? A good relapse prevention plan dictates how you need to proceed. High on that list should be talking to loved ones and getting yourself back into rehab. There’s no shame in slipping. Just don’t let the monkey climb back on your back. A slight relapse is a recoverable event.
